Our Silences | Traveling Sculptures
Ten large bronze statues are making their away across the globe, in pure silence. After making their way through London, Madrid, Brussels, and Mexico city, the art installation by Mexican artist Rivelino is now being showcased in San Diego.
The sculptures are mysterious, large, and draw attention from tourists. But while their different designs and size provide an artsy photo opp, its their silence that conveys Rivelino's cross-cultural message. Rivelino told the San Diego Union-Tribune:
"What’s important is that people can reflect about what happens when an individual decides not to say how he feels, because he can be ridiculed, or attacked, or he can be excluded. This is an important topic of discussion for a public place."
In all cities, through all languages, and amongst all people- silence is an issue that's important to overcome. Silence comes hand in hand with repression, discrimination, and a lack of creativity. So if we wish to see personal freedom thrive, innovation flourish, and representation define our social institutions, silence must be confronted as an obstacle to these liberties.
